Pilates/General

Lindsey's perception and knowledge are her greatest strengths in helping me to move more naturally and economically through Pilates. She zeroes in on my problems and communicates strengthening Pilates exercises to produce results. I became acquainted with Lindsey following an auto accident in 2002. I chose Lindsey as a Pilates instructor because of her perception, her depth of knowledge and her ability to communicate. Lindsey perceives movement that can be improved and has the extensive knowledge base for how to accomplish that improvement. Her ability to communicate the "how to" aspect is always right on the mark. She makes me feel in my body what she is talking about. I enthusiastically endorse Lindsey as a Pilates instructor to help accomplish goals because she gets results.

I have had the pleasure of having Lindsey as my Pilates instructor and Movement Analyst. I have experienced Lindsey as a motivator and excellent teacher. One example of her excellent efforts as an instructor is her ability to vocalize positive feedback. She can describe movement with ease, and conveys to the students exactly what she would like us to do using encouragement and constructive criticism. Lindsey has a thorough knowledge of the human anatomy and associates each movement accordingly. She is respectful of each individual and their capabilities in Pilates practice. I look forward to her classes every week knowing that I will have a wonderful experience leading to a longer, leaner, stronger mind and body.

Time with Lindsey has been invaluable in teaching me how to move in a way that maintains my body's health. She has a gift in understanding how the body works and in teaching her students how to move. In a few short sessions she taught me how to cure my own neck, back and shoulder pain. I wish I wish that I had known her in my ballet days!

Lindsey really knows her stuff. She is very focused and hands on. Her sense of humor and music make the sessions fun. I feel better than I have in years.

Lindsey is very skilled at giving personal attention and noticing the small details which make such a big difference. I never realized I was over-using certain muscles and not using others. Lindsey helped me identify which muscles needed work and targeted her training to meet those needs. My work with Lindsey has changed my body in many significant ways, bringing a stability and strength that had been missing.

My Experience with Lindsey has been terrific. I find the time goes by faster when working with her than in any other kind of exercise. I have seen improvements in my posture as well as reduced back and neck pain.

I never want to miss a Pilates class with Lindsey as I can feel how the experience I am having is benefiting every activity in my life. It's addicting. I want to keep progressing, improving and feeling better.

My experience with Lindsey has been very helpful and strengthening! It has helped my posture and general awareness of my body positioning. Lindsey's experience as a dancer gives her an enhanced perception of our bodies and movement. The only problem is that it becomes addictive (in a good way), and if you stay away for a period of time, you really notice it!!

I had the benefit of first working with Lindsey nine years ago following the birth of my second child and a car accident. Her skills helped get me rehabilitated and back to work. I was thrilled to find her again last year, when stress and years of bad movement habits contributed to what had become chronic back pain and headaches. Lindsey is helping me get moving the right way and in right direction. I am learning to find and move the correct muscles and getting stronger. Her gentle persistence, combined with her unique set of therapeutic skills are making a tremendous difference in my life. Thank you Lindsey!

I was referred to Lindsey Hanahan by my doctor, Joel Berenbeim, DO, from whom I was receiving prolotherapy. My initial back issues began as a teenager, and I have been involved in a number of auto accidents over the years that have worsened my back condition. I have been to countless physical therapists, but I have never experienced the positive results I am experiencing with Lindsey's one-on-one movement therapy. I had felt hopeless up to this point. Lindsey began with a comprehensive diagnostic session which gave her the "big picture." After only meeting with Lindsey for a few weeks, I began to reap the benefits of her personalized exercise program for me, which was combined with helpful guidance about incorporating the exercises into my daily activities. I am so encouraged! I highly recommend Lindsey Hanahan.

Pilates with Lindsey Hanahan has changed my life. I noticed immediate results, and after 2 weeks in her lunch time class twice a week, I had my bikini body back. The class she teaches tightened my abdominal muscles dramatically and increased my upper body strength enormously. Also, my balance and posture have improved significantly. I am confident in my body now, and have learned more about how my body moves in the last two months than in all my 41 years. Lindsey is a dedicated, insightful and thorough teacher and I very much enjoy her classes.

Pilates - Lunch

I had heard so much about Pilates that when it was being offered in my office building, I jumped at the chance to take a lunchtime class. That was a year and a half ago. My work has since moved, but I gladly make the hour round trip drive so I can be a part of Lindsey's class. I have met a great group of people. We all vary in age and ability and with the help of Lindsey's expertise, we constantly encourage one another to better our best. I never cease to be amazed by the benefits... when I started the class, I had no balance and certainly no core strength and I was suffering from chronic back pain. Now, I can spend all weekend doing yard work (not that I want to) without being a cripple on Monday. I have gone on golf vacations and not been so sore that I couldn't play two, three, four days in a row. And I no longer sit at my desk with an ice pack on my back. Need I go on...

Taking a lunch Pilates class has several benefits: I know that I've already committed to be there, so I show up; it breaks the day nicely, and in a way that reminds me that I'm taking care of myself; our class is more fun because we all know each other -- we laugh every day; we are progressing faster and trying more challenging exercises, because the class structure leads to consistent and unified practice; and Lindsey is terrific, working with us as a group while still giving us individual attention.

Sitting at a desk for 12 hours a day working on a computer, my shoulders were in constant pain and I had very poor posture. A friend of mine mentioned Pilates so I decided to look into it. During the first month of class, I continued to think "my body is supposed to be able to do what" as I constantly heard Lindsey's voice going with me to the gym, to work, to the grocery store, wakeboarding, everywhere, telling me "keep your shoulders down Dara." After a couple of months, I began to not be in pain every day and I started to notice changes in my physical appearance and posture, as well, other individuals were noticing changes in my appearance. I will never forget the day a coworker stopped and looked at me and said "you look so different, what have you been doing" and I replied with a big smile "PILATES!" Now a year later, and 25 pounds lighter, my body and mind are much healthier. With Lindsey's experience in body movement, I am able to take more out of class and apply it in my everyday life and activities. So take an hour for yourself twice a week, the benefits are well worth it!

Rehab/Sports

Lindsey's knowledge goes far beyond that of most Pilates instructors-she is truly a movement expert. She worked with my teenage daughter, a softball pitcher, to correct some issues with her pitching mechanics that no one else has been able to address. Lindsey's "coaching" is remarkable-my daughter now loves Pilates as much as athletics!

I experienced a bad back injury when I was 16. Since then I've seen numerous doctors across the state, and gone to almost every type of physical therapy, but nothing helped. Everyone said I should be feeling better, but since I wasn't, they told me I might have to live in pain for the rest of my life. After seeing a D.O. and receiving multiple treatments of prolotherapy, my doctor referred me to Lindsey. My first visit with her was incredible. She examined me thoroughly and after the examination told me that I was a mess, but treatable. She worked with me every week, teaching me to get out of "protection mode" and move freely. She also taught me how to use my muscles correctly and strengthen them without injuring myself further. Within three to four weeks I had jumped from a 6-7 pain level to almost no pain at all. One thing that impressed me was that the appointment didn't stop when I left the building. She called me to see how I was the next day, and was always reachable if I experienced a problem. We spent a long time over the phone talking about what hurts and what I can do to fix it. I never felt like I was fighting this on my own. To this day Lindsey is still teaching me to strengthen my body and live a normal, pain free life.

I have three rods in my spine due to severe scoliosis, but with a very athletic background I refused to give up on finding a way to stay in shape. I searched various places before I found Lindsey who actually took the personal time to help me discover how I could participate in Pilates. We spent numerous one-on-one sessions exploring the difficulties I had activating certain muscles and discovering ways I could engage those muscles despite the challenge of those three rods that line my spine. I have now made it into group classes and continue to build my overall strength, thanks to Lindsey's dedication to helping me live a pain-free life!!

Theater

It has been my pleasure to work with Lindsey as a dance instructor, choreographer and acting coach and she always brings wonderful insight which I believe has helped the productions we have worked on together. It is in no small part to Lindsey's tutelage that I have grown as a performer. When working on a production, Lindsey is always prepared and ready to work through the creative process. I feel that she understands the kinesthetic process of learning and brings the structure needed to bring out many nuances in the performances of the actors and students with whom she works. Lindsey demands excellence in her work and will always do whatever it takes to achieve that, and she challenges her students and casts to reach for the same level of excellence in their own work, which I find rewarding.

I have worked with Lindsey Hanahan to prepare for several auditions and callbacks. She is a caring and sensitive acting coach with a keen understanding of text. Most significantly, Lindsey approaches coaching from a movement-based perspective. Her unique approach has allowed me find new ways to connect to familiar material, while providing specific techniques that have helped me to prepare mentally and physically for a variety of auditions. Lindsey has a great ability to pinpoint trouble spots, and offer innovative solutions in a wonderfully positive and encouraging way.

Michelle Merz-Hutchinson (AEA, actor/singer)

Lindsey is one of the most experienced, talented and multi-faceted theatre professionals I have worked with in twenty years.  She is a mature artist with a wealth of experience in a variety of venues and in a large variety of roles….Lindsey knows how to tell a story [with her choreography]; the themes and through-lines were clearly sounded; characters and relationships were clear and dynamic and the work had a real style, vibrancy and presence, to which the audiences responded beautifully.

Ms. Hanahan has proven to be an imaginative, enthusiastic and skillful teacher.  I asked her to prepare a class in Elizabethan and Restoratino movement for some of my acting students.  She far exceeded my expectations, having prepared a two-hour workshop that included movement, manners, conventions and dances of both periods…she managed to impart a great deal of information in a very short time to my students…Lindsey also offered a workshop in which she implemented the Bartenieff Fundamentals and her Rudolph Laban training to help my students find their proper alignment and begin to build a vocabulary of movement…the workshops were extremely well received by the students who found them educational, challenging, fun and inspiring.

Ms. Hanahan’s attention to detail and persistence in executing with historical accuracy the dance and movement of each play has made her a fine contributor.  I am always especially impressed by her creative input.  Furthermore, her commitment to the executing of the demands of the research for each project never required prodding from me.  The positive energy that is so much a part of Lindsey’s make-up creates an inspirational atmosphere that encourages everyone involved to achieve the highest level of professionalism.

Broadway & Regional Director

Lindsey is an extremely bright, committed and energetic person.  She brings to production a drive and energy that lifts the entire cast…her preparation was first-rate, and her contribution in rehearsal, inestimable…She’s good on her feet, modifying her rehearsal goals to suit the mood and rhythm of the specific day; she has the ablity to translate theory into practice – to deal with the real needs ans skills of a cast; she understands the metaphoric qualities of a particular theatrical movement or rhythm, and can translate this vision into concrete reality.  She is an upbeat and engaging person, one whom I would not hesitate to hire again.
